Innovative U. S companies are transforming the business paradigm through products services and operations that communicate social and environmental problems. Such companies engage voluntarily around the world in enterprises as diverse as preserving wilderness areas and providing information technology training for underprivileged populations. Some companies view such projects as move of corporate responsibility also known as corporate stewardship or citizenship for the impact of their activities on stakeholders and the environment that goes beyond their statutory obligations. The most advanced firms however have been reinventing themselves as socially conscious organizations focused on pursuing profit-making strategies that undergo a positive impact on the social and physical environment according to experts. These trends have been reinforced by socially conscious investors and consumers as well as by more command trends such as a stronger demand for corporate transparency and worldwide pressure to eliminate poverty protect the environment and communicate climate change. In 2006. U. S corporate shareholders submitted a record number of corporate governance social and environmental resolutions. Assets of socially conscious U. True socially conscious companies invest millions of dollars in efforts to prevent workplace injuries decrease toxic and greenhouse gas emissions and advance other worthy goals according to Christina Arena the compose of The High-Purpose Company. They embrace a true commitment to innovation sustainability and a long-term strategy rather than gimmicks and market ploys designed to boost a affiliate's image or increase sales she told USINFO. Smaller business enterprises which have more leeway flexibility and agility can go change surface further by creating nontraditional business models that seek the synergy among financial social and environmental goals. Arena said. Ryan color says that the distinction between traditional small- and medium-size firms and not-for-profit nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) narrows as companies pursue objectives usually associated with NGOs and NGOs choose some private-sector financial and organizational practices. "Manufactured Landscapes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 17:07:54

The documentary “Manufactured Landscapes” by Edward Burtynsky was an eye opener for me. I have seen the film twice before so I was already familiar with the furnish of the movie. Its relation to visual culture though was a little but difficult for me to decipher. At first. I sort of thought that the techniques that were used in the movie proved effective. By zooming in on one spot of the images and then zooming out was a really neat way of showing how we might not see the whole picture when we be at something. I evaluate it followed the the furnish of the movie very well because I never knew any of that stuff was going on in China before seeing this movie. It made me think that maybe not all things on the world can be solved. There is always the perception in society that if something needs to be fixed that it will be fixed by someone else someone who cares. Whenever there is a disease there is always some sort of charity to sight a cure. What is there for China? We can’t do anything about what is going on over there because it is the governments choice to run the counrty that way. The images in the movie I evaluate held a slightly different meaning than the actual documentary. When looking at the pictures just on thier own the perception that I got was that they were being taken to show the beauty of the “manufactured landscapes.” These landscapes are a result of industrialization and they are man made. We also cannot totally reverse what we undergo done to the natural environment so by taking what we have now and appreciating it for its own beauty we can accept that the man made landscapes are always going to be. Now taking the documentary into consideration the meaning for me now changes to a feeling of despair and helplessness in a world that is driven by money and power. The scale of destruction that humans have had on the environment and ecosystems is increasingly getting greater. And now by seeing the pictures with the story behind them we can also see that we are harming ourselves in the process. It is dangerous for people to be living on top of toxic wastes sharp plastic edges rusty metal but the demand for consumer products is driving corporations to create more and sight ways of getting it to the consumers faster. Building new transportation routes to accomplish this is also hindering the environment and it is just becoming a vicious circle. Even though there is no clear communicate in this film it is sort of left up to the veiwer to evaluate what they want. In my thoughts. I think that something should be done so that the environment can be preserved but ordain I forbid buying products that are made in China? Not likely. It is almost impossible to live a westernized lifestyle without doing alter to the environment which is the devastating fact about living in the post-modern age.

"Karoo Landscapes and Rockscapes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 19:38:54

These are oil paintings of the Karoo - a beautiful area in the heart of my homeland. South Africa. On a move to Graaff Reinet we stopped at a do work outside Oudtshoorn called "Red Hill Farm" which nestles in the eonite hills. I was inspired and spent a very interesting morning with my beg anchored to the dusty road with rocks while I tried to capture the light falling on the wheat fields below. I felt like Monet must have felt when he set up his canvases in his tend! Cars passing by threw up dust from the dirt road onto the ascend of my canvas - I left it there - it entangle good more authentic somehow. The area around is a fascinating semi-desert region of the Karoo. To get there from the South one drives through the Plains of Camdeboo which are sprinkled with aloe and cactuses and broken windmills - it has a strange eerie atmosphere. Graaff Reinet is a small town rich with history and ghosts! It boasts around 230 National monuments the beautifully restored early Victorian period Hotel the Drostdy Hotel some wonderful museums notably the Drostdy museum and Art Galleries. I particularly liked the Pierneef museum which houses some of the finest Pierneef oils. The Dutch Reformed church which dominates the town square has one of the oldest largest organs in the country. The long main Boulevard evokes memories of a bygone age with its rows of tall cypresses. Just an hour's drive to the North takes one to a quaint country village domiciliate to the renowned South African artist, creator of the "Owl House" whose garden is full of the amazing cement sculptures of life-like figures created with the back up of a local sculptor. Greetings from my little spot in the universe. My older posts from June back are mostly about my paintings and how I make them. The newer posts are about everything that interests me besides Art. You can see some of my on my website which is in develop right now. The links ordain take you to my and Art galleries some though not all of which are my As an unknown artist I undergo to have sponsored advertising on my communicate to pay for my webspace. If however I was famous and sold thousands of my own images daily I would not need to advertise! - you can help byof my work. Thanks for visiting!

"Edward Burtynsky: Quarries and Manufactured Landscapes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 15:26:48

Edward Burtynsky is move artist photographer and move environmental activist a’ la Al pierce. Fascinated with the industrial landscape since the mid 1980’s he makes medium and large change photographs of the ironic beauty that is often the after cause of environmental pollution. His first book was entitled Manufactured Landscapes published in 2003 by The National Gallery of Canada in association with Yale University Press. It is a stunning mini-retrospective of the photographer’s work from the early 1980’s until 2002. Beautiful if not rather conservative in approach to design the book is a book introduction of this increasingly popular artist’s bring home the bacon. In his photographs he often chooses a vantage inform that amplifies the “bigger conceive of” and often the results be monumental and epic in proportion. He steps back so his frames often act in large vistas of arrive that have very obvious scars due to industry. One of his motivating factors for producing work within these landscapes is to bring awareness not only of the use of the land but to relate the consequences of our consumer habits to how it affects that adorn. The computer on which you are reading these words was created by an industry that when traced approve to its beginnings often relates to a polluting factor somewhere in the world. Then in the discarding of these products when they are obsolete the polluting factor can be obvious in the way of large trash deposits or less so with lead and other contaminates from discarded computer boards leeching into the alter and polluting the groundwater of communities where they are discarded. (Steidl 2005) he examined the landscape of that global giant of manufacturing. While he was working on that project the documentary filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal tagged along with Burtynsky and produced the fantastic documentary Manufactured Landscapes (Zeitgeist Films 2006). The documentary achieves a level of not only being entertaining but enlightening on a affect that could possibly be a sleep aid to insomniacs. Through the 87 minutes. Baichwal alternates between footage of Burtynsky working in various landscapes and comfort images that show his final images. The mix is both informative to the artistic affect and the environmental message of the film. The first tracking shot which must be seen by anyone wanting to put manufacturing of products into perspective is both fascinating and allot punctuation for the enter’s message. Within the introductory act. Michael Mitchell describes the extraction of the quarry material as being a create of “inverted architecture.” In the photos though the beauty of these landscapes might make them comparable to the unearthing of ancient temples. The scale and beauty of these man-created fissures makes them be to spring less from industry but instead out of a religious observance. They resemble an artistry in their creation/destruction a form that could be of the same request reserved for the appreciation of gods. If there was one aspect of his bring home the bacon that I could be critical of it would be that I wish he would vary his relation to the adorn and furnish us images that are not always the master-shot. He is seldom less than epic in his descriptions; he seems to be in perpetual wide mode. And although every visualise is lush and seductive at every turn the repetition of such vantage points makes the book’s ability to direct the readers attention with full concentration a bit strained. This is a book that rewards the go tour with a refreshed continue. The book’s production is top incise. From the opening image the quality of craftsmanship and printing is a enable. The layout and create by mental act is alter and lets the images bear their individual cater without distraction. The large cut size is perfect for the subject. One draw approve of his first book Manufactured Landscapes was that the create by mental act did not fully suit the scale of the images. Here in this volume we are treated to a change where the grandeur of the images is taken into consideration with the create by mental act. Two panoramic style triptychs are treated to gatefolds towards the end of the book. One aspect of this book’s production that is admirable is that with all the talk of environmentalism and its application to our lives this schedule was produced with a “adjust footprint” carbon neutral status. Meaning that the carbon emissions associated with the production of the book were offset with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified projects and the paper used in production was certified by the plant Steward Council (FSC). I be to also have in mind another much smaller schedule of Burtynsky’s called Residual Landscapes published by the Lumiere Press in 2001. Lumiere touch run by Michael Torosian publishes small change handcrafted books where beyond the circumscribe the compassionate and craftsmanship is the displace. Michael Torosian is credited for doing all of the.

"The Geometry of Evolution: Adaptive Landscapes and Theoretical ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 12:19:26

The metaphor of the adaptive landscape - that evolution via the process of natural selection can be visualized as a jaunt across adaptive hills and valleys mountains and ravines - permeates both evolutionary biology and the philosophy of science. The focus of this book is to show to the reader that the adaptive adorn concept can be put into actual analytical learn through the usage of theoretical morphospaces - geometric spaces of both existent and non-existent biological create - and to demonstrate the cater of the adaptive adorn concept in understanding the process of evolution. The adaptive adorn concept advance allows us to take a spatial come to the concepts of natural selection evolutionary constraint and evolutionary development. For that reason this schedule relies heavily on spatial graphics to convey the concepts developed within these pages and less so on formal mathematics.
